From Ptolemy (A.D. 100) to 1888 when it was moved to Greenwich, zero degrees longitude was set at Punta Orchilla, the western tip of El Hierro. At the local tourist office you can get a sealed scroll, certifying your visit "to the edge of the world"! A small, mountainous and wild island with virtually everything except beaches and hordes of tourists. There are a thousand volcanic craters and native junipers hundreds of years old, thrashed into grotesque shapes by Atlantic gales. Whether you stay at the tiny resort of Tamaduste, the Parador at Las Playas, or at Las Puntas in Frontera, on El Hierro you are really away from the pressures of the commercial world. Get there by daily inter-island flight from Tenerife North, or overnight ferry from Los Cristianos. NB: Timings of both may make a two-centre stay on Tenerife and El Hierro almost inevitable. ![]() ![]() |
