An island of all-white villages, roadside flowers and tough rules against advertising billboards. Nearest to Africa and generally the breeziest island, with long sandy beaches and an inland National Park (Timanfaya) of numerous dormant volcanoes and moon-like lava fields every bit as spectacular as Hawaii. Tourists can take a camel ride or watch wardens perform stunts such as pouring a bucket of cold water down a hole to produce an instant geyser. You can bring your own steak and cook it on a primeval barbecue of searing heat from the centre of the earth. Most accommodation is in self-catering complexes or villas with private pools, although there are also luxury hotels. Standards are high. ![]() ![]() |

Costa Teguise, further north, offers the best windsurfing. Playa Blanca, on the southern tip, is sleepy and peaceful, with a ferry service to Fuerteventura. ![]() ![]() |
